A sermon preached at St. Francis by the Lake, Canyon Lake, TX. The lectionary readings for the thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost are here. Two weeks ago we talked about the meaning of Sabbath and what it is to cease our work, our way, and intentionally focus on God’s presence as we rest in the truthContinue reading “What did he say?”

Life & Love
My heart is so sad. 51 lives. Human lives. Beloved children of God lives. Created in the image of God lives. And we have to include the human, beloved children, image of God people who didn’t die, because they were treated the same. I can’t even come up with a suitable metaphor for how theyContinue reading “Life & Love”
Be Still
I love the story of the Prophet Elijah – well, I guess ‘love’ can be a bit misleading. It definitely isn’t a happy-go-lucky kind of story but more of a document-drama that’s hard to watch but nevertheless has much to offer us all these many years later. I really appreciate what we can learn fromContinue reading “Be Still”
Love is.
As I have been carefully crafting the outline for what I plan to do with this blog, the very thing that prompted me to start it continues: violent events cutting short the lives of God’s beloved children. People doing their shopping shot by a man whose only motive is hate. Children shot by a manContinue reading “Love is.”
It’s been a while …
It feels like forever since I posted something and in fact it has been a couple of months since I wrote anything beyond my sermon or a Sunday reflection for the weeks I’m not preaching and I haven’t even posted my sermons for the past few weeks. I’m not sure of the reason, except perhapsContinue reading “It’s been a while …”
And
It’s a long one, Y’all. You might want to grab another cup before we begin … When I first started posting my writing on FB in the early fall of 2019 in response to the gun violence that has become way too common in our culture, my intent was to help us all grow moreContinue reading “And”
Made to Love
Readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter: http://lectionarypage.net/YearB_RCL/Easter/BEaster5_RCL.html Most of the time in these Living Sunday School posts, I focus on the Gospel reading for the particular Sunday. We are, after all, to proclaim the good news of Jesus because we ourselves are recipients of the good news that God loves us and invites usContinue reading “Made to Love”
Don’t Tell Anyone …
Let’s continue with the eighth chapter of the good news story as Mark tells it to us. There is just so much to unpack in the last sixteen verses of this chapter! We’ve talked about the curious two-part healing of the blind man and part of the conversation Jesus has with his disciples after theContinue reading “Don’t Tell Anyone …”
What’s Love got to do with it?
Y’all can all thank me later for that ear worm. I was having a conversation with my sister the other evening and she asked if I’d read “that book about love wins”. I immediately started throwing titles and authors at her and she stopped and asked, “just how many books with love in the titleContinue reading “What’s Love got to do with it?”
Possessed by Love
Anger and hate possess us and stop us from hearing God’s loving voice. Jesus speaks into the shouts of anger and the silence of resentment and can dispel them both. God’s love transforms our shaking fists into hands open enough to both receive and give love.
